If you’re a newbie to the world of eyelash extensions, it can take some time to learn the terminology and various differences. There are so many different effects that can be achieved with each type. Eyelash extensions have the ability to make your eyes look bigger and brighter without the need for makeup, but what's the difference between classic and volume lashes? What's the difference between 3D and 5D lash extensions? Keep reading to find out!
Classic Eyelash Extensions?
Classic eyelash extensions are pretty simple, yet beautiful, natural-looking lash extensions. They are applied on a 1:1 ratio, which means one extension on one natural lash. This allows you to achieve an understated, natural eyelash enhancement.
Classic eyelash extensions come in a broad range of materials (mink or silk), shapes thicknesses (1 to 1.5mm) and styles, so talk to your technician about the look you are trying to achieve.
The application process! The classic lash extension application typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Definitely the way to go if you’re limited on time.
Volume Eyelash Extensions
Volume eyelash extensions offer you a full look that will instantly give you some serious glamour and drama. Volume lashes - also known as Russian volume lash extensions - involve applying a “fan” of lash extensions to one lash. So, instead of the 1:1 ratio of classic lashes, you may have a 1:3 or 1:5.
3D vs 5D
There are several varieties when it comes to extensions, with 3D and 5D only being two of them. The “D” stands for dimension. The number stands for the amount of extensions applied to each natural lash. 3D is three extensions per fan adhered to one natural lash, and 5D is five extensions per fan adhered to one natural lash. The higher the number, the more extensions per fan. So, you are literally getting 3X to 5X more lashes with each and every full set and refill/touch up!
Another difference to take into consideration is the cost of application. Classic lashes require little preparation, so they are a much more affordable option if budget is important to you.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q.Is this method safe/healthy for my natural lashes?
A. Yes! The eyelash extensions used for the Volume technique are much thinner in diameter therefore very little weight is added to your lashes, including the adhesive.
Q. How do I know if I am a candidate for Volume Lashes?
A. Consult the lash stylist for a consultation! Most people are able to get at least the 3D volume effect while some are able to get up to 5D. This is based upon the health of your natural lashes, their diameter and length.
Q. Can I get more length with this new Volume technique?
A. The focus is on VOLUME with this technique. While you may get a few millimeters longer than your natural lashes, it is important to not focus on length with this method as the longer lashes are, the sparser they may appear at the base. Think of a forest of pine trees versus a garden full of bushes. The short bushes are much denser than the pine trees, as the pine trees are tall and lean. If the extensions are longer, more weight is added to your natural lash and can cause premature shedding.
Q. Can I try the Volume Lashes with my current eyelash extensions?
A. It is recommended to begin with a fresh new set, but you may be able to try a few Volume Lashes within your current set. This is not always recommended depending on the length and thickness that is being used.
3D and 5D Mink Lash Strips
3D and 5D mink lash strips are very pretty and luxurious, they are different from the standard false " Lashes" or "fiber lashes" in the way they are made and how they look. The design is different, just as dimension is defined; "3D means three-dimensional and 5D means five-dimensional, giving them fuzzy layered ends and they do not lay flat.
